James Gerald Heichel, 72, of Waterloo, died at home on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. He was born November 10, 1941 in Cedar Falls, the son of Russell C. and Inez Evelyn (Steffler) Heichel. James married Amy Kass on May 5, 2010 in Tama, Iowa. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy on the USS Hancock (CVA-19) and was an auto mechanic for many years. James owned and operated Jim's Mobile Auto Service. Survivors include his wife, Amy Kass-Heichel, of Waterloo; three daughters, Carolyn (Steven) Zeller of Topeka, Kansas, Lucy (Jerald) Baylis of Portland, Oregon and Erin (Jesse) Hill of Plainfield, Iowa; two sons, Russell C. Heichel of Traer, Iowa and James Heichel II of Kansas City, Kansas; nine grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Marilyn) Heichel, of Oregon City, Oregon, and four sisters, Jo (Larry) Haverkamp of Oregon City, Patty Johnson of Mission, Texas, Joann Wilson of Cedar Falls and Virginia Poock of Ohio. James was preceded in death by his parents, a grandchild, Hannah Lynn Heichel, and a brother, Duane Russell Heichel. Graveside inurnment services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at Hudson Cemetery in Hudson, Iowa, where military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.
