Listen to Obituary
James Warren (Jim) Hansen, 79, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died due to complications of pancreatic cancer on Thursday, February 27, 2014. Jim was born September 15, 1934 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Einer and Hilda (Sorensen) Hansen. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1952, attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1956. On June 6, 1954 he was married to the former Alice D. Petersen at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls by Pastor Homer Larsen. Jim was employed by Keystone Steel and Wire and later Hawkeye Steel Products. Jim lived in Cedar Rapids for 25 years where he attended New Covenant Bible Church and his cherished Pathfinder Senior Sunday School class. The mountaintop experience of his Christian faith was the Walk to Emmaus. He also relished the 15 warm winters that he spent in Tucson, Arizona. Jim loved to laugh, to eat ("you've gotta eat it while it's hot"), to hug, and to sing, participating with the Windy Hill Singers at the Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls. He enjoyed playing golf and supporting both University of Northern Iowa and University of Iowa football and basketball. Conversation was often limited during March Madness. Jim is survived by his wife Alice of 59 years, daughter Kay (Mark) Whiting of Lenexa, Kansas, daughter Bonnie Hansen of Colorado Springs, Colorado, son Richard Hansen of Boise, Idaho, daughter Barb (Kevin) Spahr of Cary, Illinois, sister Jean (Daniel) MacDonald of Indian Wells, California, brother Donald (Sue Ann) Hansen of San Mateo, California, brother David (Sandra) Hansen of Sun Lakes, Arizona; twelve grand-children: Shauna, Ross, Spencer and Chad Whiting; Kyle Horning, Erika (Logan) Brown and Kacy Horning; Bryan, Lauren, Eric, Kyle and Allison Spahr; and one great-grandchild, Brody Timothy.
