James Bernard Elliott, 96, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at MercyOne Cedar Falls Medical Center. He was born September 14, 1927, in Sigourney, Iowa, the son of Charles and Carrie (Thompson) Elliott. Jim attended Sigourney High School then served in the Merchant Marines from 1944-1945 which took him to New Guinea on a cargo ship and to Bristol England on a hospital ship. He enlisted in the U.S. Army serving from 1946-1948 including over two years in Japan. Jim married Laurel Eastburn on May 28, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He apprenticed for four years as a toolmaker at John Deere and worked up to a Senior Engineer Analyst retiring in 1982 with 33-1/2 years of service.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Laurel; brothers, Charles, David and Marion Elliott; and sisters: Bernice Martin, Martha Green, Dortha Dewberry, Lucille Rogers and Marjorie Van Patten. He is survived by three sons: James (Janet) Elliott of Arizona, Steve (Lisa Waterbury) Elliott of Kansas City, Missouri, and Kevin Elliott of Monfort, Wisconsin; 8 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Francis Elliott and Alice Elliott; and brother-in-law, Robert Ballmann.
Jim's Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with Visitation one hour before the service. Burial at a later date at Hillside Cemetery of Cedar Falls. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City or to the American Legion Post 138 of Waterloo .
