IRENE B.
PETERSEN, 82, of Cedar Falls, and formerly of Waterloo and Des Moines, died Tuesday, February 21, 2006, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. Irene was born February 18, 1924 at Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of William & Betty (Weis) Ahlhelm. She married Henrik J. Petersen on March 20, 1947 and they were later divorced. Irene attended St. John School in Waterloo and graduated from East Waterloo High School. She worked at the Black Hawk County Treasurer's Office for several years and then moved to Des Moines where she worked for the Des Moines Register for a number of years. Upon returning to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area, she was employed with Younkers until retiring. Irene was a Senior Companion and volunteered in Vacation Bible School and religious education at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls.
Survivors include one daughter, Lisa (Bill) Youngblut of Waterloo; three brothers, Ralph (Maye) Ahlhelm of Evansdale, Robert (Tommie) Ahlhelm of Des Moines, and Larry Ahlhelm of Evansdale; and one sister, Elaine Berry of Waterloo. Irene was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Peter Petersen; one daughter Kristelle Petersen; one brother, Donald Ahlhelm; and one sister, Madeline Shellhorn.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2006, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick School Tuition Assistance Fund.
