HELENE MARIA ELSA (LENA) VAN HEUVELEN, 100, of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, died Friday, May 18, 2001. She was born September 1, 1900, in Rudd, Iowa, the daughter of Johann F. and Bertha Amelia (Handt) Lewke. Lena married Hiram Van Heuvelen on September 1, 1923, in Mason City, Iowa. He preceded her in death on September 24, 1974.
She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Howard of Cedar Falls; three grandsons, Bruce Howard of Guam, David Howard of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and Alan Howard of Cedar Falls, and three great-grandchildren, Aaron, Nathan and Lindsey. Lena was preceded in death by her husband and parents; two sisters, Martha Fike and Bertha Lewke, and two brothers, Max and Erwin Lewke.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 21, 2001, at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church on Monday. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.
