HELEN H.
NEWMAN was born January 22, 1908 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of LeClair and Mary (Kinne) Martin. She married George F. Newman on June 28, 1937 in Cedar Falls. He preceded her in death on December 29, 1988. Helen attended Iowa State Teachers College for three years and later graduated from Gates Business College. She was a secretary in Chicago for two years and also worked in the business office at Iowa State Teachers College for many years. Helen was a life-long member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and was a member of the Woman's Club, the Nineteenth Century Club and P.E.O. She was also a scout leader and PTA member. Helen died February 16, 1999 in Tempe, Arizona at 91 years of age.
She is survived by her two sons, James M. Newman of Santa Cruz, California and Peter S. Newman of Eugene, Oregon; three grandchildren, Jenine, Ben and Bryan Newman, all of Eugene, Oregon and her sister, Esther M. Andrews of Pacific Palisades, California.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband and parents; a brother, Edward K. Martin and two sisters, Mary Grace Hetzler and Jeanne Clair Hague.
Memorial services were 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 5, 1999 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, with private inurnment at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to St. Luke's Building Fund or the Iowa College Foundation.
