Helen Frances Aurand, 92, of Evansdale, passed away at home on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. She was born April 5, 1931, in Boone, daughter of Jack and Goldia (Coleman) Mallas. Helen married Douglas LaVerne Aurand on February 26, 1950, in Boone. The couple moved to Cedar Falls when Douglas enrolled in Iowa State Teacher's College (UNI) where they lived, at one point, with their four children in a Quonset Hut. Helen was employed by JCPenneys, Woolco and Woolworths then worked at all three John Deere locations at varying times from 1973-1992.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doug; son, Samuel; and siblings: Ruby, Peter, Robert, John, Jay and Anna. She is survived by 3 daughters: Linda Martin of Waterloo, Debra Hanson of Marina, California, and Julie Hobart of Evansdale; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and brother, Kenny Mallas of Corning.
Helen's family is hosting a Celebration of Life gathering on Sunday, June 18, 2023 from 12:30-2:30 pm at the UAW Hall, 2615 Washington Avenue, in Waterloo. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the Cedar Valley Pit Bull Rescue and condolences may be left at www.DahlFuneralHome.com.
Helen was artistically-minded and enjoyed gardening, painting and was a synchronized swimmer when she was younger. She would can fruits and vegetables and cooked the best Swiss steak. Helen loved dogs and had various four-legged companions throughout her life. Her most recent dog was a long-haired dachshund named Scooter but the most beloved was her Pit Bull, Gabby, who she inherited from grandson, Shane.
She will be deeply missed.
