Hazel Violet Everts, 82, of Waverly, IA, died peacefully on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
She was born in Evansville, IN, on October 2, 1941, the daughter of Roy and Katie (Martin) Pitchers. Hazel attended Daniel Wertz Elementary School then married Clifford Smith and they later divorced. She married Kenneth McKinney and they relocated to Iowa. After Kenneth's death, she married Lester "Les" Everts in Cedar Falls on August 5, 2000.
Hazel worked for Allen Memorial Hospital as a Certified Nursing Assistant for over 25 years. Following retirement, she kept busy working part-time at Walmart for many years. Although Hazel was a homebody, she was an active member of the Stardusters Square Dancers Club in Waverly. She loved square dancing, gardening, taking trips to Branson, MO, and visiting the casino. Above all else, she loved spending time with her family.
Hazel is survived by her children, Gary (Nancy) Smith of Waverly, and Pamela (Mike) Larrew of Waterloo, and Catherine (Dave) Aschbrenner of Denver; 9 grandchildren, Keith, Anita, Jess, Ben, Seth, Sara, Katie, Kim, and Daniel; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Catherine Freeland of Petersburg, IN; and son-in-law, Don Peterson of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; second husband, Kenneth McKinney; third husband, Les Everts; son, Terry Smith; daughter, Dianna Peterson; and brothers, Royal and Oscar Pitchers.
Public visitation will be held from 5-7pm, Friday, December 1 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Hazel's funeral will be at 11am, Saturday December 2 at Orchard Hill Church in Cedar Falls with an hour visitation prior. A luncheon will take place immediately following the funeral service at the church. Burial will be at 2pm following lunch at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Cedar Falls.
