Harvey A. Byggere, 98, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, December 24, 2009, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. He was born July 25, 1911 in Royal, Iowa, the son of James and Sena (Anderson) Byggere. Harvey married Gertrude M. McCormick on January 19, 1946 in Worthington, Minnesota. He attended Iowa State Teachers College High School in Cedar Falls, and Gates Business College in Waterloo. Harvey served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was employed at Rath Packing Company and retired from John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works after more than twenty-five years of service. He was a member of Cedar Falls American Legion Post 237 for sixty-four years. Harvey was also a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and Shamrocks, and the College Square Coffee Group. He was an avid gardener and was never seen without Gertrude by his side.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Byggere, of Cedar Falls, and his daughter, Mary Louise (Gordon Pint) Byggere, of Waterloo.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and two brothers, Clarence and Elmer Byggere.
Services will be 10:30 am Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be 3—6:00 pm Monday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where a 4 pm Rosary Service will be conducted. Visitation also one hour before service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice. Online condolences may be left at www.DahlFuneralHome.com
