GILBERT R. MICHAELSEN was born January 18, 1920 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of August and Mildred (McCoy) Michaelsen. He married Mary Jane Reihsen on July 9, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa. Gilbert served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II. He fought in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, seeing action at Midway, Saipan, Okinawa and Guam. Gilbert was a 1938 graduate of Orange Township High School and farmed for 40 years in Black Hawk and Grundy Counties. He also owned and operated the Paradise Park Retirement Community in Pharr, Texas for 22 years. Gilbert was a member of the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49, the Dike American Legion Post 471 and St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls. He died Tuesday, September 10, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at 82 years of age. Gilbert is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, of Cedar Falls; two sons, Ron Michaelsen and his wife Marcia of Waterloo and Jon Michaelsen and his friend Polly Loveland of Dike, Iowa; a daughter, Jane Doddema and her husband Dale of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, William A. Michaelsen and his wife Frances and Robert C. Michaelsen and his wife Esther, all of Waterloo, and two sisters, June Hansen and her husband Roy of Jesup, Iowa and Norma Jean Bohlman and her husband Dorsey of Dallas, Texas.  He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 13, 2002, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial at Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls.  Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church, 705 Main St., Cedar Falls, Iowa  50613.
