86, of Cedar Falls died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Sartori Memorial Hospital following a short illness. He was born August 20, 1917 near Hudson, Iowa the son on Alfred Karl & Lucy (Hummel) Gutknecht. Gilbert served in the U.S. Army during WWII then he married Joan Kerns May 5, 1950 at St. John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. She preceded him in death December 1, 2000. He was employed at Chamberlain Manufacturing in Waterloo for 38 years retiring in 1979.
Survivors include three sons, Gilbert Gutknecht, Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Rochester, Minnesota, Brad Gutknecht of Urbandale, Iowa and Todd Gutknecht and his wife, Tracie, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren and one sister, Dorothy Garman of Pueblo, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother, Sidney Gutknecht; and three sisters, Alice Jacobsen, Kathryn Hinson, and Bette Broadwater.
Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. Full military rites were conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49.
