Listen to Obituary

Gerald "Jerry" Jerome Vorland, 71, of Cedar Falls, left his earthly body on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at the Deery Suites in Cedar Falls. He was born December 7, 1952, to Dr. Earl C. and Loraine (Herbranson) Vorland. Jerry attended Cedar Falls High School, graduating in 1971, the University of Northern Iowa, where he majored in Art, then Hawkeye Community College where he earned his degree in Photography. Jerry was recognized in the Cedar Falls area as the face of Vorland Photography for over 30 years. On April 21, 2002, he married Kathleen "KD" Garetson at Backbone State Park, blending their families with three children, Allison, Allyson, and Caleb.

Jerry loved his wife, his Jeep, working in his yard, the Courier's crossword puzzles, comfort food, and hosting friends and family at their home. However, what made his heart sing were his grandchildren. He and KD spent several New Year's Eves with the McTrips, as he called them, and thoroughly enjoyed watching them at football and wrestling events. Grampa taught Max how TO drive a car, and how NOT TO drive the lawn tractor. Kaytlen and Lorelei especially melted his heart. He could never say no even to a second helping of ice cream when they asked - just don't tell Grammie!

Jerry is survived by his wife, K.D. Vorland of Cedar Falls; children, Allison (Glenn) Ringheden of Waterloo, Allyson (Matt) McLaughlin of Denver, and Caleb (April) Krutsinger of Waverly; grandchildren, Kaytlen, Vincent, Connor, Gavin, Maximus, and Lorelei; brothers, Dr. David (Terri) Vorland of Cedar Falls, Tim (Teri) Vorland of West Des Moines, and Randy (Michelle) Vorland of Hudson; mother-in-law, Audrey Garetson of Lamont; sister-in-law, Kris (Tom) McIntee of Williamsburg; brother-in-law, Keith Garetson of Renwick; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert (Julia) Vorland; father-in-law, Kenneth Garetson, Sr; and brother-in-law, Kenneth (Julie) Garetson, Jr.

A visitation will be held from 4-7pm, Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at Dahl-Van Hove Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, with a vigil service at 6pm, where friends and family can share special memories and stories of Jerry. His memorial service will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, September 19 at Cedar Falls Christian Church with visitation an hour prior. Please join the family for a reception immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family for future designation.

The family is creating a photo album as their guestbook, and would like your help with the book's contents. Please bring a photo of yourself, a photo with you and Jerry, a photo of you taken by Jerry, or a photo of Jerry to include with Jerry's Scrapbook. You may also mail your photo to the funeral home to forward on to the family.
