Gerald (Gerry) Arthur Bruess, age 62, of Cedar Falls, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2021, at MercyOne/Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 16, 1959, son of Cornell and LaVerne (Sabelka) Bruess. Gerry graduated in 1977 from Crestwood High School in Cresco, and worked at Carlson Construction for several years. He completed certification in Electronic Engineering from Hawkeye Tech, then moved on to work as a Security Technician with Radio Communications for ten years. Gerry, then, went to work for the State of Iowa for IPTV and Iowa Communications Network (ICN) for over 20 years.
Gerry married the love of his life, Jill DeVoe on August 23, 1986. They established roots in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area and raised twin sons, Chris and John. Gerry loved being a husband and father. Together he and Jill guided Chris and John through Boy Scouts, soccer, paper routes, and many school/community activities. Gerry made his family his top priority. He was chef, garden planner, gadget-maker, and general chauffeur. Gerry's hobbies included fishing, golfing every chance he got, and playing cards. He was also an avid Hawkeye, Twins, and Vikings fan.
Gerry was preceded in death by his father, Cornell, and three siblings (in infancy): Patricia, Mary Jo, and Steven; his father-in law, Robert DeVoe; and sister-in-law, Carmen DeVoe. He is survived by his mother, LaVerne Bruess of Cresco; his wife of 35 years, Jill; his sons, Chris and John; siblings: Karen (Mary) Bruess, Ken Bruess, Linda (Rich) Lechtenberg, Jean (Dean) Bruess, Mike Bruess, and Chuck (Angie) Bruess. He is also survived by nephews, Matthew and Sam Lechtenberg, niece, Megan (Jeff) Nesvik, nephew, Chas (Sami) Bruess and niece, Jalynn (Tanner) Roberts; grand-nieces, Alice Bruess and Nora Nesvik; and grand-nephews, Colton Bruess and Calvin Nesvik. Gerry is also survived by his mother-in-law, Juanita DeVoe; and brother-in-law, John DeVoe. And last, but certainly not least, he is survived by his golf buddies (you know who you are)!
A small funeral service will be held at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls on Thursday, September 9 th at 11 am with private family graveside service to follow. A Celebration of Life will be held following the burial at Beaver Hills Country Club in rural Cedar Falls for all of his family and friends.
