Survivors include his sister, Melba (Jerry) Tolstrup, of Webster City, Iowa, a niece, Gail Harrison, of Blountville, Tennessee and a nephew, David Schmidt, of Woolstock, Iowa, and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers, Lyle and Donald Mathews.

Services will be 1:30 pm Thursday, November 1, 2007, at Nazareth Lutheran Church Chapel, with interment at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the Senior Activity Program, 528 Main St., Cedar Falls.
