GARY B. JOHNSON was born February 23, 1937 in Waukon, Iowa the son of Earl and Gertrude (Ludeking) Johnson. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1955 then served in the U. S. Air Force as a weather technician. He worked for the National Weather Service in Chicago, Des Moines, and Waterloo. Gary retired in 1992 with 33 years of service, the last 20 at the weather station at the Waterloo Airport. Gary died Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at Sartori Memorial Hospital, Cedar Falls, at the age of 64 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Krista Johnson and Vicki Reuter, both of Cedar Falls, two grandchildren, his mother, Gertrude Johnson of Decorah; two brothers, Don Johnson of Akron, Ohio, and Thomas Johnson of Des Moines, and his good friend, Nona Smith and her daughters, Wendy Smith and Ryanne North, all of Cedar Falls.
Gary was preceded in death by his father and his sister, Charlotte, who died at birth.
Funeral services were 1 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2001 at First Lutheran Church with burial in Lutheran Cemetery, both in Decorah. Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral & Cremation Service in Cedar Falls and for an hour before service time at the church on Friday. Memorials may be directed to Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls or First Lutheran Church in Decorah.
