Gary J. Downs, 58, of Waterloo, died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at his home. Gary was born April 12, 1951 in Waterloo, the son of Raymond & Mary (Senosk) Downs. He married Melissa Anderson June 7, 1974 in Evansdale. They later divorced. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1970. Gary was employed in the maintenance department of the Cedar Falls Community School District for 32 years, retiring in 2004.
Survivors include his son, Justin (Amber) Downs of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Jennifer Downs and Jamei Matteson, both of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren, Jasper, Nevaeh, & Tytus Downs, and Ateanna, Genaya, and Gejwan Hayes; four brothers, Mike (Deb) Downs of Phoenix, Arizona, Pete (Suzie) Downs of Cedar Falls, Tim (JoDee) Downs of Readlyn, Iowa, and John (Shelly) Downs of Chandler, Arizona; and three sisters, Rosemary (Paul) Lamphier of Oelwein, Iowa, Joyce (Tom) Woods of Randalia, Iowa and Nancy (Brad) Langrehr of Kingman, Kansas. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dave Downs.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with interment at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens at a later date. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and for one hour prior to service time Saturday at the funeral home. A memorial fund will be established.
