Gary Alberts, 79, of Hudson, passed away peacefully at MercyOne Hospital in Waterloo on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, after a battle with breathing/lung issues. He was born in Aplington to Roy and Helen (Oldenburger) Alberts on June 11, 1943. He married Phyllis (Escher) on October 5, 1962, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg; the couple recently celebrated their 60 th anniversary with a greeting card party.
Gary is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two children: Greg (Jodi) Alberts of Des Moines, and Michelle (Rick) Dryml of Cedar Rapids. He left behind four grandchildren: Tim (Brittany) Alberts, Annie (Dusty) Masolini, Nikolai Alberts of Des Moines, and Bryan Dryml of Cedar Rapids; as well as four great-grandsons: Zander, Briggs, and Gannon Alberts, and Kruz Masolini, all of Des Moines. Gary also left behind two sisters: Sharlene Miller, and Sherida (Ron) Davis, both of Allison. Gary was preceded in death by his and his wife's parents, and Billy Miller, his brother-in-law.
Gary loved and supported his family above all else. He thoroughly enjoyed and respected the natural environment, including camping, hunting and target shooting sports. There was rarely a meal Gary ate that he didn't think was delicious. He enjoyed attending many UNI sporting events, and was a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs football fan. Gary was one of many long-time Hudson Boy Scout leaders in the 1970's to 80's during a period when an extraordinary number of Hudson boys achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He fondly remembered canoeing the northern boundary waters with an older group of Boy Scouts. He enjoyed golfing and fishing – he eventually taught Phyllis to bait her own fishing hook. Gary was civic-minded: he was an member of the Hudson Lions Club, Sons of Amvets, Isaac Walton League, and was part of the crew who built the rocket slide in Hudson's city park. He continued his service to others after he passed with donations to the Iowa Donor Network. Gary was a Teamster and drove a truck, most recently for H&W Motor Express for 33 years, retiring in 2002.
Gary was deeply loved by his family and will be soulfully missed until they meet him again. Memorials may be given in Gary's name to the Grundy-Tama Izaak Walton League, 107 Commercial St, Reinbeck, IA 50669
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Izaak Walton League of Grundy-Tama County care of 1541 Hwy. T55, Gladbrook, IA 50635.
