Francis Patrick Costa

Francis Patrick Costa, 85, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at the Western Home Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center in Cedar Falls. He was born March 17, 1928 in Hughson, California, the son of Antone and Mary Margaret (Enos) Costa. Francis married Mary Lou Mendonca on February 8, 1953 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hughson. Francis served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for Nielson's Blacksmith & Welding and later the Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery in Modesto, California for thirty-seven years. After retirement, he worked in maintenance at St. Patrick Catholic School in Cedar Falls. Francis was a member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed carpentry and welding. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Costa, of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Luann (Gary L. Johnson) Alemao-Johnson, of Cedar Falls; a son, Bruce (Teresa) Costa, of Parkersburg, Iowa; six grandchildren, Andrew Alemao, Gareth Costa, Benjamin Costa, Garrett Johnson, Zach (Kristin) Johnson and Jessamyn Johnson; a great granddaughter, Katherine Johnson; two brothers, Don (Jean) Costa of Turlock, California and Clarence "Bud" (Jan) Costa of Sonora, California, and a sister, Delores (Jim) Coehlo, of Turlock. Francis was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Joseph Alemao; four brothers, Louie, Larry, Tony and Fred Costa, and two sisters, Evelyn Borges and Helen George. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2013, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with inurnment 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, at Fairview Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic School or the Western Home Foundation.
