F. Elizabeth Maxwell Vaughan, 93, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, December 22, 2020, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center, from complications of cancer. Elizabeth was born August 17, 1927 in Patnos, Georgia, the daughter of Norman and Mary Lou (Brunson) Maxwell. She married Clinton C. Vaughan on November 5, 1948 in Douglas, Georgia. Governor Ed Rivers of Georgia, a close family friend, attended the wedding. Clinton preceded Elizabeth in death in May of 1985. Elizabeth was a graduate of Coffee County High School, and earned her Associate Degree at South Georgia College, both in Douglas. She earned her B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa. Elizabeth taught elementary school in Georgia, and later with the Waterloo School System for over 30 years, including Orange, Washburn and Lowell Elementary Schools, retiring in 1992. She was a member of NEA, Walnut Ridge Baptist Church in Waterloo, and later Cedar Falls Christian Church.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Karen (Lynn) Barnes, of Cedar Falls; two grandsons, Joshua P. (Laura) Barnes of Bettendorf, Iowa and Kyle M. (Sara) Barnes of Iowa City, Iowa; four great grandchildren, Ryan P., Emily J., Hailey M. and Frederick C. Barnes; her sister, Mary Ellie Maxwell (Don) Pitts, of Phenix City, Alabama; her brother, Oswell Maxwell, of Tallahassee, Florida, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; the love of her life, Clinton C. Vaughan; a sister, Barbara A. Maxwell Lewis, and a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Maxwell.
Due to COVID restrictions, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Garden of Memories in Waterloo, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cedar Falls Christian Church, cfchristianchurch.com. Online condolences may be left at www.DahlFuneralHome.com.
