Evelyn "Sandy" D. Turner, 99, formerly of Cedar Falls, died late Saturday, July 13, 2024 at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison.
Sandy was born September 29, 1924 in Finchford to the late William and Irma (Whitney) Sands. She graduated from Janesville High School in 1942, Gates Business College with a Secretarial Certification and also attended Iowa Teachers College. Sandy married Verne Turner on October 26, 1946 in Cedar Falls. Through the years the couple owned and operated the Northern Lights Resort on Lake Kabetogama in northern Minnesota, enjoying many years of fishing. Over the years, Sandy also worked at Twin Pines Egg Hatchery raising chickens, decorated wedding cakes and worked as a custodian for the Cedar Falls School system for 17 years, retiring in 1990. While working for the school system, she polished pennies and made ceramic eggs as gifts for the students. After 44 years together, Verne died on December 30, 1990. Sandy went on to enjoy spending her later years with Bob Witlatch and later Elbert Briden.
Sandy is survived by her son, Scott Turner of Allison; grandson, Jason Turner (Alexis) of Cedar Falls; great-granddaughter, Mina Turner; several foster children, extended family and dear friends. She is preceded in death by her sons, Don, Dean and Gene Turner; and siblings, Vernon, Donald, David and Harold Sands, Patricia Graham and infant sister, Shirley; and senior companions, Bob Witlatch and Elbert Briden.
The funeral service for Sandy will be 10:30 AM on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Cedar Falls. Visitation will be from 9:30 until the time of service on Thursday at the church. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
