Eugene "Gene" Shields, 82, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, April 8, 2013, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. He was born March 24, 1931 in Cedar Falls, the son of Lyle and Elsie Marie (Grapp) Shields. Gene married Mary Dorothy Heinen on June 13, 1959 in Preston, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and worked at Clay Equipment Company in Cedar Falls for forty-seven years, retiring in 1993. Gene was a member of Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 and First Christian Church, Cedar Falls. Survivors include his wife, Mary Shields, of Cedar Falls; a son, Mark Shields, of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren, Sharon Randall, Elizabeth (Jacob) Randall, Amber (Levi) Loy and Zachary Shields; two great grandchildren, Amara and Braxton Randall; three sisters, Lorraine Evelyn England of Tama, Iowa, Betty Virginia Brown of Waterloo and Gertrude Arlene Sullivan of Sulvisca, Arizona, and a son-in-law, Gary Randall, of Rogers, Arkansas. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Gene and Timothy Shields; a daughter, Theresa Randall; two brothers, Edward and Edgar Shields, and a sister, Lula Erwin. Services will be 11:00 am Friday, April 12, 2013, at First Christian Church in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be 37:00 pm Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before service at the church. Inurnment will be 3:00 pm Monday, April 15, at Washington Chapel Cemetery, rural Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Memorials may be directed to First Christian Church.
