Ethel Iona Nielsen, 88, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, November 7, 2008, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. She was born November 30, 1919 at Remsen, Iowa, the daughter of Morten and Katherine (Juhl) Mortensen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in rural Oyens, Iowa. Ethel married Roy J. Nielsen on February 21, 1942 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa. He preceded her in death June 8, 1995. She was employed at Hy Vee Food Store in College Square for over forty years in public relations.
Ethel is survived by four sons, Paul (Shirley) Nielsen of Dike, Roger (Katie) Nielsen of Phoenix, Arizona, Steve (Bev) Nielsen of Columbus Junction, Iowa and Stan (Debbie) Nielsen of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Barb Johnsen of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Julie (Dave) Uhrich of Nisswa, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son-in-law, Roger Johnsen, and three brothers, Melvin, Wayne and Lloyd Mortensen.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 15, 2008, at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, November 14, 2008, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before services at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to Nazareth Lutheran Church and Christian Crusaders.
