ETHEL McCOMBS,
100, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 4, 2005 at Mallard Point. She was born August 31, 1905 in Kingston, Arkansas the daughter of Clifford Reed & Irene Ellen (Titus) Garton. Ethel received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. While attending school in Cedar Falls she met Wesley Blum. She taught school for a year and then married Wesley on July 23, 1925 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death March 14, 1937. She married Lester McCombs February 3, 1973 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death August 31, 1994. Ethel was employed by Transamerica Insurance Company in Detroit, Michigan for 18 years where she was an Underwriter. After retiring in 1970, she moved back to Cedar Falls.
Survivors include two daughters, Ethel Abkes of Cedar Falls and Caroline (Walter) Johnson of Aplington; two sons, Robert Blum of Waterloo and Roger (Ruth) Blum of Veradale, Washington; 23 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, and many great great grandchildren; one brother, Russell Kidder of Cedar Falls; two sisters, Merle Phillips of Wheaton, Illinois and Yvonne (Joe) Waller of Cedar Falls; and one daughter-in-law, Irene Blum of Cedar Falls. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands; three sons, Wesley Blum, Jr., Harold Blum and William Blum; a son-in-law, Virgil Abkes; a daughter-in-law, Madie Blum; two granddaughters, two great grandchildren, three brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services were 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2005, at First United Methodist Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the church of Amenity Hospice.
