ESTHER E. SCHARDT, 90, of Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa and formerly of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, in Dubuque. She was born July 2, 1912 in Belmond, Iowa, the daughter of Rev. W. E. F. and Marie (Friesleben) Meier. She married the Rev. Adolph G. Schardt on July 16, 1933 in Manson, Iowa. Esther graduated from Manson High School and was an alumnus of Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. She and Adolph moved to Cedar Falls in 1944 when Adolph took the position as pastor of St. John Lutheran Church. Esther was a musician, served various charities and was employed by the Cedar Falls School System.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn (Rev. Andrew) Oppedahl of Dubuque; a son, Joel Schardt of Minneapolis, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Mark Oppedahl of Dubuque, Nathan Oppedahl of Minneapolis, Paul (Natalie) Leske Oppedahl of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Beth Chaplin of Dubuque and Paul Fisher of Palm Springs, California; three great-grandchildren and a son-in-law, Rev. Donald Fisher of Dana Point, California. Esther was preceded in death by her husband and parents; a daughter, Lucia Fisher and a sister, Magdalene Meier.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial at Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. A memorial fund will be established.Visits: 0
