Edward "Ed" J. Herting, 90, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Dubuque, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Ed was born in Dyersville on December 20, 1934, to John and Adelle (Meis) Herting. He graduated from Loras Academy in Dubuque in 1952, prior to attending Loras College. During college, Ed was drafted into the United States Army where he served in the 594th Artillery Battalion during the Vietnam War from 1954 to 1956. On August 30, 1958, Ed married JoAnn Kutsch at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Dubuque. They spent 62 years happily married prior to JoAnn's passing on October 18, 2020.
Ed spent his career as a sales representative with St. Regis Paper Company and Georgia Pacific Corporation from 1956 to 1999. He was also a sales broker with Georgia Pacific from 1999 to 2002, following an early retirement.
Whether for his large family or just him and JoAnn, Ed enjoyed cooking and grilling. He was an avid card player and particularly loved playing Bridge, Poker and Euchre. During their 62 years together, Ed and JoAnn were faithful and devoted parishioners of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Dubuque where Ed was also a weekly usher. Together, Ed and JoAnn introduced their family to Door County, Wisconsin, which became an annual family-fun spot. They also enjoyed their annual excursions to Florida, and extended visits to their daughter's home in California. Ed also volunteered and raised money for Wahlert Catholic High School and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Ed is survived by his five children, Karen (Kent) Johnson, Paula (Shawn) Kelly, David Herting, Michael (Lisa) Herting, and Greg Herting; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Lynn (Larry) Trebon, and Jeanne (Jack) Kiefer. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, JoAnn Herting; seven siblings, Lawrence Herting, Delores Luloff, Ray Herting, Jeanette Schmidt, Bernice Swinton, Marian Hess, and Lois Eckland; two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Patrick Stedman; in-laws, Harold and Jeanette Kutsch; and nephews, Scott Trebon and Mark Kiefer.
Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1870 St. Ambrose St. in Dubuque, with Mass immediately following at 11 a.m. and will be live-streamed on the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home website and church website (www.stanthony-dubuque.org/).
