DOROTHY MAY
KOEHRING, 101, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 11, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. She was born June 16, 1898 near Lawrence, Kansas, the daughter of William and Estelle (Miller) Koehring. Dorothy was a Phi Betta Kappa graduate of the University of Kansas at Lawrence and received her Masters degree at Columbia University in New York City in 1921. She returned to Lawrence to teach kindergarten for five years before moving to Normal, Illinois, where she taught kindergarten for three years at the Illinois State Normal University lab school. Dorothy received a teaching fellowship at Yale University where she earned her Doctorate degree. The remainder of her teaching career was spent on the faculty of Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) from 1953 until her retirement in 1970. Dorothy then went to work as the regional training officer for the Iowa Head Start Program.
She is survived by her nephew, William Seeley, Jr. and his wife Karlene of La Canada, California; and four cousins.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gertrude Seeley.
Memorial services were 4:30 p.m. Sunday, January 16, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Black Hawk County, 3912 Cedar Heights Dr. in Cedar Falls. Private committal services will be in Lawrence, Kansas at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the church.
