Donald R. Schemmel, 86, of Cedar Falls, died of natural causes at his home on Saturday, December 1, 2007. He was born October 18, 1921 in Worthington, Iowa, the son of Theodore and Helen (Mangerich) Schemmel. Donald was united in marriage to Margery Wessels on August 14, 1951 in Blessing, Iowa, by his brother, Fr. Joseph Schemmel. She preceded him in death on February 28, 2007. Donald was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Worthington and attended Loras College. He served with the US Navy during WW II as a radioman on a PT Boat in the South Pacific. Donald was an insurance agent with John Hancock Insurance and a Real Estate Broker. He was also co-owner of Maytag-Omatic on College Hill and Waterloo Rd. Laundromat in Cedar Falls for over 35 years. Donald was a member of Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 and the Elks Lodge #290 in Waterloo.

Survivors include his son, David (Kathern) Schemmel, of Waterloo, Iowa and his daughter, Deb Schemmel, of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren, Travis and Angela Schemmel, both of Waterloo, and a great grandson, Austin.

Donald was preceded in death by his wife and parents; two brothers, Fr. Joseph and Floyd Schemmel; and six sisters, DeLores, Mary Enette, Ruth, Bernadette, Edith and Margaret.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls, with entombment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be 4—8:00 pm Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where a 4:00 pm Rosary Service and a 7:00 pm Vigil Service will be conducted. Visitation also one hour before service at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
