Donald J. Friis

Donald J. Friis, 93, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center. He was born September 30, 1918 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of Hans and Amelia (Leversee) Friis. Don served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and was a self-employed finish carpenter for many years, specializing in the construction of financial institutions across the United States. Survivors include his sister, Lillian Painter, of Matthews, North Carolina; three nieces, Barb Henze of Shell Rock, Julie Friis of Cedar Falls and Eileen Varian of Matthews, North Carolina; a nephew, Harold Hinz, of Denver, Iowa, and many great nieces and great nephews. Services will be 1:30 pm Monday, January 23, 2012, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund will be established at a later date.
