DOLORES
CARTER, 80, died at her home in Cedar Falls, on Saturday, January 14, 2006. She was born January 20, 1925 at Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph I. and Daisy A. (Lindahl) Gray . She married David L. (Pete) Carter on February 25, 1948 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. He preceded her in death on May 21, 1976. Dolores graduated from the Allen School of Nursing in 1946 and started working in Veterans Hospitals in Des Moines, Cook County, Illinois and Houston, Texas. She worked at Schoitz Hospital from 1958 to 1966. Dolores was the director of nursing for the Red Cross for 22 years and established the Blood Mobil program in northeast Iowa in 1966. In 1986, the DeCarter Nursing Award was established for volunteer nurses . She was inducted into the Allen Nursing Association Hall of Fame in May of 2001. Dolores was an active member of Green Scene.
She is survived by three sons, Lynn Carter of Knoxville, Tennessee, Paul (Cathy) Carter of Roselle, Illinois and John (Patti) Carter of Grimes, Iowa; six grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Carter, Jonathan (Courtney) Carter, Channing Carter, Laura De Carter, Abby (Matt) Snowberger and Betsy Carter; and one great grandchild, Jackson David Carter.
Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Boyd Gray.
Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2006, at Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls. Burial will be in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Green Scene and the Allen College of Nursing.
