Dean L. Berggren, 80, of Cedar Falls, died at his home, Tuesday, November 12, 2013. He was born, September 27, 1933 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the son of Paul D. and Hazel I (Hunt) Berggren. Dean married Elizabeth (Betsy) Conrad June 24, 1956 in Chariton, Iowa. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1951, Iowa State in 1955, where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. In the Air Force ROTC. Dean then attended MIT studying meteorology for his assignment at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. After completion of his four years of service he went to work for John Deere PEC as a chemical engineer, retiring in 1984. Dean enjoyed all sports, especially golfing and riding his bicycle. He also was a lifelong member of Cedar Heights Community Presbyterian Church. Dean is survived by his wife, Betsy Berggren of Cedar Falls; two sons, Kevin (Jackie) Berggren and Curt (Chris) Berggren, both of Cedar Falls; three daughters, Lisa Berggren of Waterloo, Angela Berggren of Frisco, Texas, and Mary (Kent) Heckman of Muscatine, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Keeley (Adam) Van Pelt, Desarae (Nate) Pierce, Kory Berggren, Alex Heckman, Eric Heckman, Brandon Berggren, and Ashley Berggren; one great grandson, Brayson Van Pelt; one brother, Lynn (Jackie) Berggren and one sister, Jessie (Bruce) Sorensen, both of Cedar Falls and one sister in law, Deborah Berggren of Bethesda, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, P. Dow Berggren. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 16, at Cedar Heights Community Presbyterian Church.
