Clifford Donald Sund, 91, of Cedar Falls, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Deery Suites at Western Home Communities. He was born May 2, 1933, in New Rockford, North Dakota, son of Edward and Petra (Spangberg) Sund (Immigrants from Norway). Cliff attended country school and graduated from Sheyenne (North Dakota) High School, then served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, he earned his B.S. in Engineering from the North Dakota State University School of Agriculture in Fargo. Cliff came to the Cedar Valley to work for John Deere. He met a lovely young lady named Karen Oestreich and they married on June 11, 1961, in Lytton, Iowa. Cliff worked for John Deere for 40 years before retiring in 2000.
Clifford was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Matthew E. Sund (1/4/1973); sisters: Thelma Myhre, Gladys Erickson, Anna Irmen; and brothers: Glen, Harold, Erling and Rolf Sund. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Karen; children: David (Penny) Sund of Cedar Falls and Diane (Mark) Sullivan of Ely; and 6 grandchildren: Joshua (Sierra Brooke) Sund, Jacob Sund, Jessica Sund, Caitlin (Tyler) Arnburg, Hailey (Dirk Clark) Sullivan and Grant Sullivan.
Cliff's Funeral Service will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in the Larsen Chapel at Nazareth Lutheran Church (Entrance 7 off University Avenue) with Visitation the evening prior from 5-7:00 pm at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Lutheran Emanuel Cemetery of Coon Valley Township, Iowa (South of Lytton). In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
Clifford was a soft spoken, kind and gentle man. He enjoyed helping with the Naz builders and working with Habitat for Humanity. Cliff was an avid golfer who shot 5 holes-in-one during his lifetime. When he couldn't play golf any longer, he would watch it on TV (Karen learned all of the golfers' names against her will). Cliff was also a bicycle enthusiast and loved riding the Cedar Valley trails. He loved watching his Iowa Hawkeyes and North Dakota State University basketball and football games. Cliff not only embraced his Lutheran upbringing but also had a personal relationship with the Lord. He was a humble man from humble beginnings who worked hard during his lifetime to achieve many wonderful things, but his greatest source of pride and joy was his family.
