CLIFFORD WILLIAM STREIN, 88, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died from complications of Parkinson's Disease on Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa. He was born November 13, 1916 in rural New Hartford, Iowa, the son of William and Ethel (Hughes) Strein. Clifford married Doris Owens on July 31, 1943 in Boston, Massachusetts, and they later divorced. He married Virginia O'Neill on December 24, 1947 in Hiawatha, Kansas. She preceded him in death in December of 1987. Clifford married Nan Nelson on October 14, 1988 in Waterloo, Iowa. He attended country school in rural New Hartford and served with the US Navy during WW II. Clifford farmed and custom farmed for several years near New Hartford. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the US Navy in 1974 after 31 years of service to his country. Clifford owned and operated The Silver Spur Saddle Shop in Waterloo for many years. He was a member of the Hudson and Cedar Falls American Legion Posts, The Waterloo Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Clifford also was a member of the Black Hawk Creek Saddle Club, The Pony Express of Iowa, The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Dept. Equestrian Posse and The Fleet Reserve Association. He was a 4-H horse judge for many years. Clifford was much loved by his entire family and was known as "Papa" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Nan, of Cedar Falls; a son, Charles (Janice) Strein of Outting, Minnesota; two daughters, Sandra Kritenbrink of Valparaiso, Indiana and Rhonda (Joe) Thrush of Apache Junction, Arizona; three step-sons, Mark (Patty) Nelson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Phillip (Cheryl) Nelson of Frankfort, Kansas and Stacey Nelson of Cedar Falls; two step-daughters, Georgia Toma of Cedar Rapids and Lynne Parmenter of Marion, Iowa; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Hauran of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota and Gladys Strein of Mareno Valley, California.  Clifford was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Eugene Strein, two granddaughters, and a brother, Al Strein.

Funeral services were 11:00 am Saturday, September 3, 2005, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.  His casket was transferred to Oak Hill Cemetery in New Hartford by Heritage Farms horse drawn hearse.  Military committal rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.   Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or The Cedar Falls Municipal Band.
