Charlotte Irene Smith

Charlotte Irene Smith, 85, of Cedar Falls, passed away at MercyOne/Covenant in Waterloo. She was born in Pleasanton, Iowa, on January 13, 1941, daughter of George and Edith (McCormick) Pearce. Charlotte graduated from Janesville High School and later earned her Bachelor and Masters Degrees from UNI. She married Louis Smith on November 17, 1973 at Valley Baptist Church of Cedar Falls. Charlotte was a special education teacher for many years in the Waterloo School District.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Raymond Vaughn. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Louie; 5 sons: Terry (Priscilla) Vaughn, David (Cindy) Vaughn, Robert (Julie) Vaughn, Greg (Beth) Smith and Darren (Angie) Smith; 7 grandchildren: Stephanie (Mike), Jacob (Brooke), Stacy (Joe), Mathew, Brittney, Mya (Brevenn) and Ethan; a great-grandson, Brevenn “Junie” Jr.; and siblings, Don (Emily) Pearce and Janice Ahlhelm.

Charlotte’s Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, June 12, 2026, with Visitation the evening prior from 4-6:00 pm, both at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home of Cedar Falls. Burial at Washington Chapel Cemetery also of Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation.

Charlotte was a very strong, capable but loving woman. She lettered in basketball in high school and even drag raced in her younger years with her sister, Jan. Charlotte and Louie loved to dance together, especially to ZZ Top. They traveled extensively through the United States during their life together, often camping with their active family. Some of Charlotte's favorite times were spent with her horses and being with those she loved on their boat, "Passion". Above all else, she cherished her family and was always there when they wanted or needed to talk.
