CHARLES JOHN UBAN II was born June 29, 1921 in Thompson, Iowa, the son of John and Mildred (Jensen) Uban. He married Emma Jo Schnucker on August 2, 1945 in Waterloo, Iowa. Charles was a graduate of West Waterloo High School and Iowa State University. He was a pilot in the China National Aviation Corps AVG (Flying Tigers) during WW II. Charles was stationed in the India-Burma theatre of operations and was decorated by the U.S. Air Force with the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and 4 Bronze Service Stars, as well as decorations from the Chinese government. He was a pilot for Pan-Am Airlines and served two terms as State Representative. Charles owned and operated Uban Oil Company in Waterloo for over 50 years, receiving a citation from Governor Branstad for "Excellence in Energy Conservation". He died Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, at 82 years of age. Charles is survived by his wife, Emma Jo, of Waterloo; three sons, C. John (Judy) Uban of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Stephen (Nicolle) Uban of Stillwater, Minnesota and Mark (Karen) Uban of West Frankfort, Illinois; two daughters, Jolynn Grace of St. Croix, Virgin Islands and Mary Ann Uban of Chaska, Minnesota; twelve grandchildren, Aaron (Georgette) Uban, Sera and Jesse Harold, Kristina and Julia Uban, Will, Jacob and Eli Uban, Isaac Uban, Scott, Carly and Mitch Elmgren; and two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Sophia Uban. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Theo Uban, and two sisters, Mary and Helen.

A memorial service was 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 5, 2003 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home.  Memorials may be directed to the Charles J. Uban Memorial, Hartman Reserve Nature Center, 657 Reserve Dr., Cedar Falls, Iowa  50613.
