Charles E. Strattan, 87, of Cedar Falls, died at home on Tuesday, June 14, 2011. He was born February 23, 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Charles and Bessie (Gibbons) Strattan. Charles graduated from Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska. He married Mary Ehm on February 10, 1961 in Omaha. Charles served in the US Army Air Corps 408th Bombardment Squadron, 22nd Bombardment Group, Fifth Air Force, flying B-24 Liberator Bombers in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, during World War II. Before his retirement in 1990, he was a salesman for the United States Checkbook Company for forty-five years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Cedar Falls; one son, Michael (Kathleen) Strattan, of Urbandale, Iowa; one daughter, Laura (Matt) Carpenter, of Rochester, Michigan; three grandchildren, Emily Strattan, Michael and Andrew Carpenter, and two step grandchildren, Austin and Spencer Carpenter.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Glen Strattan, and one sister, Jean Nomland.
Services will be 10:30 am Friday, June 17, 2011, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Waterloo, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before the service at the church. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
