November 14, 1925 — December 29, 2015

Listen to Obituary
C. Kenneth Harmon, 90, of Crystal, Minnesota and formerly of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at Colonial Acres Health Care Center in Golden Valley, Minnesota. Ken was born November 14, 1925 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Chester & Muriel (Parsons) Harmon. He married Helene Van Mill December 6, 1945 in Sacramento, California. She preceded him in death March 3, 2009. Ken served in the U. S. Navy during WWII and in 1984 he retired from John Deere, where he worked as a tool and die maker and later as a quality control supervisor at the Product Engineering Center.

Ken was well-loved by friends and family alike. He was a skilled craftsman and carpenter, traveled extensively with his family to every corner of the continent and several locations overseas, and believed fervently in family, God, and country. His service beyond World War II included many years with the VFW and he was the lead organizer for fundraising and construction of the All Veterans Memorial in Lindstrom, MN, on Highway 8. He never forgot his humblest beginnings on the farm, and was always one of the guys to lend a helping hand when something needed doing. Kenney had a mischievous twinkle if he was up to something, and could laugh so hard he would cry; he taught love, respect, and honor - through deed, not word - and was a master hugger. He will be so very, very missed by so many people.

Survivors include his daughter, Konni (Steve) Finical, of Golden Valley; his daughter-in-law, Marsha Harmon, of Rock Island Illinois; four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; his sister, Sally Kurt, of Waterloo, and his close friend and companion, Helen Shafer, of Crystal, Minnesota.

Ken was preceded in death by his wife and parents; his son, Craig Harmon; a grandson, Jon Harmon, in infancy; and three sisters, Naomia Bolton, Helen Harken, and Hazel Glassel.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 8, 2016, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 pm Thursday and one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association and VFW Post 1678 Benevolence Fund in Shafer, Minnesota.
