BETTY COWAN WALIN, 86, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa. She was born February 8, 1917, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Florence (Bellamy) Cowan. Betty married Clifford Walin on October 28, 1953 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Cedar Falls and he subsequently preceded her in death. She was a 1934 graduate of Cedar Falls High School. Betty attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She worked at Wieboldt's Store in Chicago, Illinois and at Iowa Sports Supply in Cedar Falls. Betty was the Executive Director of the Conestoga Council of Girl Scouts from 1965 until her retirement in 1982. She was a longtime member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and a charter member and first president of the Sartori Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Betty was also a lifetime member of the Cedar Falls Historical Society and a member of the Cedar Falls Woman's Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary (Richard) Wieck of Cedar Falls and two grandchildren, Nathaniel (fiancée Rebecca Olson) Wieck and Amanda Wieck, both of Cedar Falls. Betty was preceded in death by her parents.Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to St. Luke's Episcopal Church or Sartori Memorial Hospital.
