Arvid Waschek

Arvid Waschek, 91, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Thuesen Cottage, Western Home Communities.  He was born March 31, 1926 the son of  Frank and Alma (Gelle) Waschek in Osseo, Minnesota. Arvid married Elsa M. Peterson June 19, 1948 in Madison, Minnesota. In 1949 he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation he worked as an engineer at J. C. Case in Racine, Wisconsin. He then came to work for John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works.  While there he worked in hydraulics until 1979 when he founded Iowa Laser Technology with two other partners. Arvid spent several enjoyable years there until they sold it in 2011 which had grown to a total of 190 employees.

Arvid was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and in the Sunday School. For several years he worked with disadvantaged youths at the YMCA in Waterloo.  Arvid also was active in the Sons of Norway.

He is survived by his wife, Elsa Waschek, of Cedar Falls; two sons, Robert (Cindy) Waschek, of Kendall, Wisconsin and James (Pauline) Waschek, of Golden Valley, Minnesota; one daughter, Ann (Chuck) Peterson, of Cedar Falls; one son-in-law, Mark Baldwin; twelve grandchildren, Matt, Randi (Duez), Abbie (Jacob), Ben (Emily), Ellie (Matt), Luke, Jennifer, Liz (Daniel), Becky, Amy (Andy), Julie (Andrew), and Joanna (Rocky), and seventeen great grandchildren.
Arvid was preceded in death by parents, one daughter, Sue Baldwin, and three brothers, Darrel, Dennis and Franklin Waschek.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, both in Cedar Falls.
