Listen to Obituary

December 19, 2025.  Anna was surrounded by family as she was welcomed into her Lord's loving embrace.

Anna was born on January 5, 1963, the daughter of Floyd and Patricia (Jones) Kalkhoff.  Anna was the youngest of five children and graduated from Carroll Kuemper High School in 1981.  Anna furthered her education at Iowa State University, graduating in 1985 with a degree in Social Work.

Anna started her career in Child Protection in Burlington, IA and soon moved to Waterloo where she worked for over 32 years at the Department of Human Services.  During her career, Anna faced many challenging situations while helping others.  Anna was known for her wit and strength and did not shy away from confrontation when necessary.  Anna had a certain "look" to her and when you received that look, you knew something was about to change.  Anna took pride in her gift of listening and enjoyed helping others problem-solve for themselves.  Anna could usually diffuse any tense situation with her humor or (if needed) a few poignant comments.  The word "poignant" might be generous. 😊

In 1993, Anna married Scott Hambly and to that union were born Nicholas and Emily.  Anna and Scott later divorced but remained friendly.  In 2000, Anna and Larry Johansen were married and maintained their home in Cedar Falls for 25 years, until her death.  Anna and Larry worked together at DHS for over 30 years.

Anna can be best described as a strong, brave, funny, crafty and sincere woman. Anna was never a fan of the spotlight or any sort of focused attention.  In those situations, Anna would usually defer to Larry and at times to her annoyance because Larry was a bit more social than Anna resulting in Anna having to wait around.  Larry and Anna were polar opposites, but their differences only enhanced their strong bond and love for each other.

Anna loved being a mom and always made sure Nick and Emily knew they were loved.  Anna would introduce them to a variety of interests and then would stand back and let them settle into what interested them.  Anna so enjoyed watching Nick and Em grow into the fine adults we have all come to know and love.  One family memory was that Anna would always say "have a good rest" at bedtime as she did not care to say 'Goodnight.'   When asked, Anna simply stated that the word goodnight always sounded "too final."

In March of 2023, Anna received her best and most beloved promotion to "Nana".  A little blonde named Addison Ann entered the world and Nana's world forever changed.  Addy quickly became the owner of Nana and Papa's hearts and basically could do no wrong.  Simple perfection that only a grandparent can describe.

Our world forever changed on December 19th when Anna went to be with her Lord and Savior.  Anna would not want us to linger in grief, but to live aloud and celebrate our time with each other.

Anna is preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Patricia Kalkhoff; father-in-law, Lyle Johansen; uncles and aunt Don (Leana) Kalkhoff; Bernard Gross; David Jones and a cousin James Gross.

Those left to cherish Anna's memory include her husband, Larry; children Nicholas (Angela) Hambly; Emily Hambly (Jeb Blain) and of course precious Addison Ann Blain.  Siblings include Mary (Paul) Hagen of Cedar Rapids; Tom (Annette) Kalkhoff of Spirit Lake; Dave (Jessica) Kalkhoff of Waukee; Jim (Kim) Kalkhoff of Waterloo and two bonus sisters- Lorraine Kalkhoff of Newton and Ann Overton of Vinton.  Anna is also survived by her mother-in law Lois Johansen and in-laws- Lee and Linda Johansen; Lonny and Tiffany Johansen and Lane and Lezley Johansen, all of West Union.  Also left to cherish her memory are her aunt Marlene Gross of Cedar Rapids, cousin Debbie Jones; and a bonus son Trevor (Kenzie Luck) Denny of Cedar Falls.  Anna is survived by two generations of nieces and nephews and wonderful friends from near and far.

Anna was a wonderful blessing to this world and will be sorely missed by those who love her.  Until we meet again…Have a Good Rest, Sweet Anna Marie.

The memorial service for Anna will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 5, 2026 at St. John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, IA.  This will be Anna's first Heavenly Birthday.  Since, Anna loved to wear bright colors, feel free to "color up" for her birthday, if you feel so inclined.
