Alfred J. Semm, 96, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, September 26, 2011, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly. He was born November 1, 1914, at Alta Vista, Iowa, the son of Fred and Minna (Glienke) Semm. Al graduated from the Wartburg Academy, Waverly. He married Dorothy Mae Hagedorn on September 7, 1952 in Waterloo, Iowa. She preceded him in death August 4, 2003. Al was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy Air Corp. He owned and operated Iowa Refrigeration Co. in Cedara Falls from 1950 to 1997. He was an active member of American Legion Post # 237,and Forty and Eight, and a charter member of Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. Al is survived by his daughter, Debra (Gil) Rich of Sumner, Iowa, three grandchildren, Karen (Nathan) Thompson of Cedar Rapids and Laura (Joel) Nelson of Council Bluffs and Jeremy Rich of Dubuque; two great grandchildren, Abigail Nelson and Noah Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William and Emil Semm, eight sisters, Bertha, Louise, and Millie Semm, Martha Fox, Anne Fischer, Carolyn Andrews, Marie Nelson, and Emma Collazo. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 30, 2011 at Nazareth Lutheran church with burial in Garden of Memories, Waterloo, Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church on Friday.
