Rev. Alfred Van Dyke, 90, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. He was born June 18, 1919 in Midland Park, New Jersey, the son of Albert and Henrietta (Winkler) Van Dyke. He married Elizabeth Weis on December 25, 1940 in Wayne Township, New Jersey. During WWII he worked as a tool and die maker for Curtis Propeller Corp. He then served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, with rank of Second Class Petty Officer. After the war he graduated from Grace Bible College and spent fifteen years in the Gospel ministry, serving churches in St. Louis, MO; Alton, IL, Ashtabula, OH, and Riverdale, IL. He earned a BA degree from Elmhurst College, an MA from Purdue University. He retired from being chairman of the Social Studies department of Thornwood High School in South Holland, IL. In retirement he served as a supply minister in various churches.
He is survived by one daughter, Linnea (Dr. Guy) Chiattello, of Cedar Falls; two sons, Dr. Daniel Van Dyke, of Rochester, Minnesota and Frederick (Kate) Van Dyke, of Niles, Michigan; twelve grandchildren, three step grand children, ten great grandchildren; one brother in law, Henry (Lois) Weis of Kinnelon, New Jersey; one niece and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Elizabeth.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church in Waterloo, with burial at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, in Cedar Falls. Military Honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be one hour before service time at the church. Memorials may be directed to Walnut Ridge Baptist Church. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
