A. Viola Van Hauen, 90, of Waterloo, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. She was born July 17, 1919 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Otis and Eliza (Bechtol) Taylor. Viola married Glenn A. Van Hauen on February 8, 1940 in Canton, South Dakota. He preceded her in death on January 8, 2005. Viola was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School and attended Iowa Normal School (UNI). She taught school for a few years, was co-owner and office manager for thirty-two years at the DX Bulk Oil Plant in Cedar Falls, and farmed with her husband in Black Hawk County for many years. Viola was a member of various church and school organizations, square dance clubs, and was co-founder of the Iowa Association for Children with Learning Disabilities.
Survivors include three sons, Mark (Joan) Van Hauen of Clive, Iowa, John (Vicki) Van Hauen of Cedar Falls, and Scott (Lynda) Van Hauen of Janesville, Iowa; a daughter, Glenda Husome, of Waterloo; fifteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren; and her son-in-law, Marv Frey, of Cherokee, Iowa.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters; a daughter, Barbara Frey; a granddaughter, Nancy Van Hauen, and a son-in-law, Lowell Husome.
Services will be 11:00 am Friday, July 31, 2009, at Heartland Vineyard Church, with inurnment at a later date at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be 5—8:00 pm Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before service at the church. Memorials may be directed to Newell Post Adult Day Care Center, Waterloo, Iowa.
